This month, DK published Play & Learn With Your Baby, the tie-book to the popular, pioneering Cbeebies show The Baby Club, presented by Giovanna Fletcher and Nigel Clarke. Like the show, Play & Learn With Your Baby is targeted at those who have children aged 6 months - 18 months, giving parents and carers ideas for interactive, imaginative games and activities to enjoy.
Play-time is a great way to bond with your child and to have fun together, however the challenge of entertaining your baby throughout the day can be tough. Attending baby clubs is a great way to keep your child busy, but it isn't always practical or suitable for you and your daily routine. This is where Play & Learn With Your Baby fits in and guides parents who want the benefits that baby clubs offer by recreating those activities at home.
This book works by using a blend of things featured on the show, natural activities based around the home and a range of songs to help build the confidence of parents by giving them the tools they need. Each activity is accessible to all and easy to follow as well as leaving room to modify to each child's needs and preferences. Activities can also be modified to children's ages, allowing the book to grow with them and yet still be relevant to younger siblings later down the line. It really is one of the most versatile parenting books currently available in the UK.
As well as great activities, Play & Learn With Your Baby also looks into the psychology of child development and that is the theory behind all of the activities. It will also show you how you can apply these principals to other activities you enjoy with your baby even while attending other groups and play dates. Editorial consultant for the book, Dr Sally Smith, is a professor of child development and current CEO for the charity Peeple. Her expertise in the area is what concretes the psychology of the book.
In her role as CEO of Peeple, Sally helps support parents and children to make the most of the learning opportunities available to them through everyday activities, a theme that is at the core of this book. As a charity, Peeple helped develop the Peep Learning Together Programme to explain why these activities are so useful and beneficial. Based in Oxford, they work with families locally but have a range of trained practitioners from around the UK and beyond to use their programme in the hope of reaching more families who need it.
In the foreword, written by Nigel Clarke himself, he admits that when his children were younger, he never really tapped into baby clubs. It's something we're all guilty of I think, especially with our first child as that first visit is one of the most nerve wracking moments of parenthood. Nigel also went on to say that:
"My training highlighted how everyday activities are great opportunities for a baby to learn"
This is something I loved reading as it made me realise that the majority of the activities we do at baby group, we could easily mimic at home either with our child one-to-one or with a few friends.
An activity I love is "What's in the bag". It is so simple, so easy and Cecily loves it. The suspense of opening the bag and slowly revealing what's inside is magical and even when we have gone through the process a hundred times, she is still surprised! It's wonderful. It's also helped fuel her curious side. She now has to look into every box, bag or hiding place she can find to see what may be there, helping her explore the world around her.
One thing I love about this book is that it proves the point that you don't need expensive toys. When we had Lily, I constantly felt guilty about not being able to afford the popular, flashy, branded toys and always had this feeling that she was missing out. Play & Learn With Your Baby shows that a cardboard box is the greatest toy, especially when it comes to role play. Everything you need for your child to learn and grow can be found around the home, any home no matter what the family background or circumstance. Boxes allow you to make a den, an obstacle course or a sensory cave. The possibilities are endless!
Play & Learn With Your Baby is available to buy now from a range of suppliers including Amazon for only £14.99.
